About Bedupako

Bedupako is a living, community-built archive of Uttarakhand’s folk memory—songs, stories, places, instruments, and languages—organized so future generations can find, learn, and contribute.

Uttarakhand: land, people, and folk traditions

From the high Himalayas to river valleys and forested ridges, Uttarakhand’s culture is shaped by migration, seasons, farming cycles, forests, and pilgrim routes. Folk music carries everyday history—work songs, wedding songs, devotion, humor, and stories of love and separation.

Regions & languages

Kumaon

Kumaoni folk traditions include classics like “Bedu Pako Baro Masa,” Jhora/Chanchari dance-songs, and rich storytelling traditions.

Garhwal

Garhwali music is known for lyrical ballads, devotional songs, and energetic rhythms often centered on dhol-damau.

Jaunsar–Bawar

Jaunsari traditions have distinctive melodies, dance forms, and local instruments, reflecting a unique Himalayan cultural corridor.

Flora, fauna, and the Himalayan soundscape

Folk culture lives in the landscape—rhododendron blooms (buransh), alpine meadows, deodar forests, and high peaks. Birds, rivers, and village life shape the rhythm of songs and instruments. Bedupako will also document nature-linked references found in lyrics and oral histories.
